Promote the Vote Sounds the Alarm on New Anti-Voter Petition

MICHIGAN – On Monday, Michigan Republicans announced the launch of an anti-voter ballot initiative – “Secure MI Vote” – that would effectively suppress the vote in Michigan. In response, Shira Roza, voting rights manager for Promote the Vote released the following statement:

“This petition is an attack on our freedom to vote. Michigan already has a voter ID law that requires each voter to verify their identity prior to voting. This ballot initiative will put up barriers and remove options for registered voters in Michigan seeking to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

“Michigan voters have worked hard to make voting more convenient and accessible. We need to build on the success of the 2020 election and adopt true early voting, provide adequate time for pre-processing of absentee ballots, and adopt pre-registration to ensure young people can make their voices heard when they turn eighteen. We also must prohibit intimidation, interference, and harassment of election officials and poll workers to ensure that future elections run smoothly and that public servants can safely continue to perform their critical functions.

“Today, we’re calling on voters to come together, like we have before – across race, background, and ZIP code – to defend our freedom to vote and decline to sign this sham, anti-voter petition. We encourage folks to join Promote the Vote in helping to educate and engage voters.”
